Market Outlook : Nifty Support at 22202–22088; Resistance at 22474–2260
Investment Point Daily | Monday, October 12, 2026
Friends,
The Indian stock market witnessed renewed selling pressure on Monday, October 12, 2026, as benchmark indices failed to sustain their early gains. Despite Friday's strong recovery, investors remained cautious amid rising crude oil prices, persistent foreign institutional selling, inflation concerns and global economic uncertainty.
The Nifty 50 declined 157.10 points (0.70%) to close at 22,363.35, while the BSE Sensex dropped 547.65 points (0.76%) to settle at 71,924.68.
However, broader market performance remained mixed, with selective buying in small-cap stocks indicating that investor interest has not disappeared entirely.
Major Reasons Behind Market Decline :
1. Continued Foreign Institutional Selling
Persistent selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained a major concern. Foreign capital outflows continued to weigh on market sentiment, particularly in heavyweight stocks, limiting the potential for a sustained recovery.
2. Rising Crude Oil Prices
Brent crude oil traded around $106 per barrel, raising concerns about India's import bill, inflation and corporate profitability. Higher energy prices can increase transportation and manufacturing costs, affecting profit margins across several industries.
3. RBI Policy and Inflation Concerns
Investors closely monitored the Reserve Bank of India's measures to support the Indian rupee while awaiting domestic inflation data. Uncertainty surrounding inflation and monetary policy contributed to cautious trading.
4. Profit Booking in Heavyweight Stocks
Following Friday's recovery, profit booking emerged in banking, IT and other index-heavyweight stocks. Selling pressure prevented benchmark indices from maintaining their initial upward momentum.
5. Quarterly Corporate Earnings
With the quarterly earnings season underway, investors are assessing whether corporate profitability can withstand rising input costs, currency fluctuations and global economic challenges.
FII–DII Activity :
Institutional investment flows remain an important factor influencing market direction.
According to the latest available confirmed figures, FIIs recorded net cash-market sales of ₹3,568.90 crore on Friday, October 9, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) registered net purchases of ₹4,743.26 crore.
Domestic institutional buying helped absorb part of the foreign selling pressure. However, continued overseas outflows remain a challenge for large-cap stocks.
Note: These figures relate to October 9, not October 12. The final October 12 FII–DII figures have not been independently verified for this report.
Sector-Wise Performance :
Sectoral performance remained mixed throughout Monday's trading session.
The media index gained approximately 4.6%, followed by realty at around 1% and auto at 0.9%. Pharmaceutical stocks also witnessed selective buying.
The Nifty Smallcap 100 index advanced approximately 1.4%, while the midcap segment remained largely unchanged. Conversely, IT, FMCG, metals and banking stocks faced selling pressure. Tech Mahindra, ITC, Larsen & Toubro, Hindalco and Hindustan Unilever were among the weaker performers. Meanwhile, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Bajaj Auto and Bharat Electronics attracted buying interest.
This divergence indicates a stock-specific market rather than uniform weakness across all sectors.
Crude Oil, Rupee and RBI :
Brent crude prices around $106 per barrel remain a concern for India's import-dependent economy. Higher crude prices could increase import expenditure, fuel inflation and pressure corporate margins. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee reportedly appreciated by approximately 1% following RBI measures aimed at managing dollar demand.
Although currency stability may support market sentiment, sustained improvement will depend on crude oil movements, foreign investment flows and broader global conditions.
Nifty Technical Outlook : Important Support and Resistance Levels
Technically, Nifty's short-term trend remains cautious, with resistance at higher levels.
NIFTY OCT Future : 22,399.90
Support Zone : 22272 / 22202 Points
Further Downside Levels : 22173 / 22088 Points
Resistance Zone : 22474 / 22533 / 22606 Points
A sustained move above 22474 could encourage short covering towards 22533 – 22606. A further breakout above 22606 may open the possibility of recovery towards 22707.
Conversely, a decisive breakdown below 22272 – 22202 could increase selling pressure, potentially extending the decline towards 22180 and 22088.
Nifty 22202 is a crucial support level, while 22474 remains the immediate recovery hurdle.
The next trading session will be influenced by global market cues, crude oil prices, rupee movements, institutional flows, inflation data and quarterly earnings announcements.
Traders should avoid aggressive positions without price and volume confirmation.
Investment Point's View :
The Indian equity market is experiencing heightened volatility, making disciplined risk management particularly important. Short-term traders should follow predefined stop-loss levels, avoid excessive leverage and monitor important technical zones.
Long-term investors should focus on fundamentally strong companies, reasonable valuations, earnings growth and financial stability rather than reacting to short-term fluctuations.
Conclusion : The near-term market outlook remains cautious. A sustained recovery above 22474–22606 could improve sentiment, while a breakdown below 22202 may increase downside risks. Institutional flows, crude oil prices and corporate earnings will remain key market drivers.
